Overview

The movie "The Billion Dollar Code" released on Netflix tells an interesting legal dispute relating to the birth of two Digital Earth platforms and the economic value of the software.

The Digital Earth (DE) Vision incorporates a digitally-formatted Earth accessible directly through the internet-connected citizens of the planet and supports facilitating data and information provision to others. Digital Earth makes use of digital technologies to model earth systems, including its cultural and social aspects represented by human societies living on the planet. The model is a multidimensional, multiscale, multitemporal, and multilayered information system. DE is also a platform to support national and international cooperation for global sustainable development, and a newly-developing point of economic growth and social well-being.

The International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) is an international organization promoting academic exchange, science and technology innovation, education, and international collaboration. Its mission is to benefit society by promoting the development and realization of DE.

The aim of this session (organized by the ISDE) is to discuss the social and economic benefits of DE and its current and future challenges but as well discuss current critical issues like data governance and AI ethic, industry engagement, citizen participation, digital ecosystems… The session foresees six short presentations addressing relevant topics followed by one hour round table to allow the audience to interact with the panelists.
