BiographyJosef Strobl is Professor at the University of Salzburg and head of the Austrian Academy of Sciences Commission for GIScience. He holds degrees in Geography from Vienna University and has been teaching GIScience and related subjects at universities worldwide. As a founding director of the iSPACE Research Studio and the AW Department for GIScience he has established academic research beyond university environments. Serving as a board member for international academic organizations in the geospatial domain and on the editorial boards of leading journals in Geoinformatics and GIScience, he is promoting and spearheading various educational, organizational and research initiatives. AbstractGeospatial Foundations for Citizen ScienceOpen geospatial data serve as a reference frame for a majority of Citizen Science initiatives. Observations are connected by location, co-location and proximity stimulate interpretation, and spatial analyses generate new questions. Digital Earth perspectives bring research into personal contexts and individual environments, opening up science for citizen participation.
