BiographyAlessandro Annoni is currently the President of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE). Before his retirement in 2020 he was the Head of the Digital Economy Unit at the European Commission Joint Research Centre. His unit provided techno-socio-economic research in support to the Digital Economy and ensured the technical coordination of the INSPIRE Directive developing the European Spatial Data Infrastructure. Alessandro graduated in Physics from the University of Milan and before joining the JRC, he worked for several years in the private sector as manager of companies specialised in Remote Sensing, Geomatics, Software and Information Systems development.AbstractDigital Earth evolving vision and perspectivesThis presentation aims to introduce Digital Earth and its evolving vision (since Al Gore speech in 1998). Whereas several elements of the original vision have been implemented by the industry, other unforeseen challenges emerged due to the digital transformation of our society. The predominant role of the industry comparing to the government and the intensive use of personal data require new frameworks for collaboration and new rules to better profit of the DE technologies for the benefits of our society. This presentation will discuss the evolution of the vision and new challenges to be addressed but as well the opportunities of the industry to make new business and to use their technologies for good.
