Construction industry faces unique challenges not only with the design, construction and operations of new infrastructure, but, also, maintenance of existing assets. Whether it is about vertical or, horizontal construction that not includes over the ground infrastructure, but, also underground assets, the infrastructure construction eco-system is dynamic to the core.

Traditionally, the construction industry is organized in a segregated way, which unfortunately acts as a bane rather than being a boon when it comes to information handover from one phase to another in a typical project life cycle. To combat this lapse, many developed countries across the world are now making Building Information Modelling (BIM), a modern business process for construction as a policy mandate.

BIM is a process that involves creating and using an intelligent 3D model to inform and communicate project decisions. Design, visualization, simulation, and collaboration enabled by BIM solutions provide greater clarity for all stakeholders across the project lifecycle. BIM makes it easier to achieve project and business goals. This process of analysis gains its optimal potency when it gets integrated with Geospatial Information and Technology which facilitates the development and maintenance of infrastructure assets by eliminating data redundancy, miscommunication, and costly conversion when moving through the entire project life cycle of infrastructure construction process that follows - planning, design, construction, and operation. This integration gets further steam when allied technologies like mobile, cloud computing, etc., are thrown into the mix.

Through this exclusive track on modern infrastructure construction processes titled - ‘Geo-IT: The ‘Enabler’ Ingredient in the Infrastructure Construction Project Life Cycle Mix’, we will trace the enabler role of geospatial information and technology combining with supporting ICT tools and techniques that is integrated with BIM to create sustainable infrastructural assets with a greater control on the project life cycle of not only new projects, but, also, existing ones that demand renovation and re-modelling.

Program Outline

Sessions:

  • 1 Integrating GIT, BIM and ICT for a Sustainable Infrastructure: This session will focus on advocating the the need and importance of integrating Geospatial with complementing ICT solutions along with BIM to develop future proof and sustainable infrastructure assets which is a vital pre-requisite for a sustainable infrastructure.
  • 2 Geospatially-Enabled Infrastructure Asset Development and Maintenance: This session will be roll over into two parts with a firm focus on bringing to light the importance of Geospatial in various aspects of development and maintenance of infrastructural assets that includes – Buildings, Roadways, Highways, Utilities (including underground utility assets), etc., that forms an integral part of any modern day city.
  • 3 Geospatially-Enabled Infrastructure Asset Development and Maintenance (cont’d): Further case studies and papers will be presented in this area continuing from the second session.
  • 4 (Panel Discussion) Integrating Geospatial with BIM and ICT for Optimal ROI on Infrastructure Projects: Many developed countries across the globe are taking rapid steps towards adding more teeth to their infrastructure construction initiatives by adopting BIM as a business process for similar projects purely due to reasons that revolve around having a greater control across the entire project life cycle. Interestingly, Geospatial Technologies finds itself in the middle of every level in a typical project life cycle – Planning, Designing, Building, and Maintenance that can successfully interact with BIM at each stage. This integration gains further prominence when complementing ICT solutions are thrown into the mix resulting in empowering the project stakeholders at every stage – right from planner to architect, to builder and moving on to the owner/operator. This kind of control effectively ensures mitigation of construction issues such as mismatches, rework, clashes and ensures efficiency in terms of improved cost, quality & time. This panel discussion will feature experts who will throw light on the importance of this integration and will focus on bringing to light the potential of achieving optimal ROI from this initiation.
