Biography
Dr. Mohamad Kassem is an Associate Professor in Engineering Project Management at Teesside University (UK) and expert in Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the Design, Construction and Operation (DCO) industry at different scales ranging from organisation to supply chain and market-wide scale. In 2014, as the EU BIM consultant to the Brazilian Government, Dr. Kassem developed a BIM policy report for the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) and the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management (MPOG) for the implementation of BIM national initiatives in Brazil. Over the last six years, Dr. Kassem has done extensive research and published tens of articles on BIM processes and technologies. He holds several research and enterprise grants from British and international funding bodies. He is a Co-Principal Investigator on an international research project (2014-2018) funded by the Qatar Foundation ($ 940,000) and the supervisor on four Knowledge Transfer Partnerships ($ 760,000) funded by UK Innovate.

Abstract
Benefits from integrating BIM + GIS data & models for assessing their adoption at country level

Geo Information Systems (GIS) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) have similarities and differences that make them complementary and suitable to transform the way we make decisions about our built environment. While GIS started to diffuse into the industry much earlier than BIM, BIM is currently proliferating across organizations, project teams and whole countries. Governments and large procurers across the world are starting to mandate or encourage the use of BIM tools and workflows. To understand the adoption of BIM and GIS at country scale, it is important to identify the components that influence their adoption and encourage their diffusion. Based on research conducted by Dr Mohamad Kassem (UK) and Dr Bilal Succar (AU), this presentation will first illustrate the similarities and differences between BIM and GIS and the benefits from their integration in terms of enabling new decisions about our built environment. Then, it will introduce a number concepts and decision support tools that can be used to develop policies for, or assess the adoption of, BIM and GIS at market level.
