Big Data, Geospatial Data and Conservation

The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in its Annual Report 2017 emphasises the need for integrated space technology applications in areas such as global health, disaster management, climate change, humanitarian assistance, environmental monitoring and natural resource management.

With Big Data and Geospatial Data receiving much attention to solving complex problems of resource use and efficiency, time has come to focus on how to make innovative uses of Geo Spatial data in conservation action and big data as well as related analytics for decision making in conservation. The time for this discussion is significant since the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is currently engaged in designing the global conservation strategic plan and targets for the period 2021-2030, coinciding with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A panel discussion during the Geospatial World Forum could focus on the following issues:

New and emerging applications for geospatial data in modern conservation action and decision making Big data and related analytics in dealing with complex issues of ecosystem management, biodiversity conservation Democratisation of data – options and challenges, and Integrating geospatial and big data tools and approaches in defining the scope of post 2020 global biodiversity strategic plan.
