Abstract Geospatial information integration for city management and development in Rio de Janeiro
In the last decade, sustainable growth and social development issues assumed a central role in the agenda of public policies in global, regional and local levels of action.
Geotechnologies and geospatial information have a special place in this dynamic, providing the necessary resources for more efficient development of policies and quick responses to the needs of municipal management, in the search of a smarter, more integrated and sustainable city.
Instituto Pereira Passos (IPP) is the department from Rio de Janeiro's City Hall responsible for GIS and management of municipal geoprocessing system. IPP performs the production, analysis and dissemination of geographical information, in the form of tables, maps, studies and web application. One of the missions of IPP is to promote the integration of information from several sources, aiming the improvement of knowledge about the city. Therefore, besides disseminating information to the citizen, IPP is responsible for managing the database of the municipality, giving support to several local and corporate systems.
IPP has recently established the Municipal Urban Information System, integrating all geospatial data produced in Rio de Janeiro's municipality, organizing it in a single corporate database and developing web application for municipal departments to do online editing, updating and georeferencing of their cadastral data and actions. Based on its experience in the use of geotechnologies, IPP assumes a prominent position in the conduction of these processes in partnership with other departments, combining the provision of a large database - embracing a wide range of urban dynamics themes - to the experience in the use of this information for designing of public policies.
The systematization of geospatial information is the key to integrated and innovative responses, bringing several departments to act together. These actions provide an important improvement for a corporative database with organized, accessible and updated geospatial information, eliminating duplication of information, outdated data and other obstacles to information access. This integration is crucial for efficient planning, implementing and monitoring of public policies, allowing better knowledge and using geospatial information to promote sustainable development of the city, both socially, economically and environmentally.
