Abstract
Very High Resolution Satellite Imagery, status and future capabilities

In times with ever increasing speed of land-use changes ? agglomerations and infrastructures swelling, rural areas dwindling, heavier natural or man-made hazards affecting territory, power supplies de-centralising ? more innovative monitoring capabilities are needed that keep pace with the dynamism. This explains the boom of unmanned observation drones. But drones, like the former aerial photography planes, have a limited mission lifetime, are dependent on a launch infrastructure, can?t be lifted from every place due to country specific regulations. This presentation will therefore describe innovation that satellite observation has experienced, its traditional assets being large area coverage with uniform image quality over continents as well as long orbital permanence facilitating time series of territorial development. With the launch in August 2014, WorldView-3 opens up a new era for the commercial optical satellite business having the highest resolution available to date across 8 multispectral bands and shortwave infrared bands.
