Abstract
Location: More Than A Place in Space

Future City Glasgow is an innovative programme which uses technology intelligently and actively engages residents to make life in the city smarter, safer and more sustainable. In 2013, Glasgow City Council beat 29 other UK cities to win £24m from the UK government’s innovation agency, now Innovate UK, after showing that the local authority could integrate transport, communications and other infrastructure to improve the city’s economy and quality of life and reduce environmental impact better than anywhere else in Britain The Future Cities Demonstrator Project was born. Glasgow has created something quite special for Future Cities Glasgow. An ever-expanding data warehouse for storage and distribution, audit and information management, unique in its form and specification, will enable citizens to interact with partners more intelligently than ever before. Technology is making our cityscape safer and more welcoming. Disadvantaged homes and communities suffering poverty are encouraged and emboldened to reach out for guidance and support through Smart technologies and initiatives to re-energise their lives and to provide help and support in their daily life-challenges. Public sector service delivery is being transformed by sharing information and services – delivering better services for Glasgow’s people. The presentation will outline the values of Future City Glasgow and show examples of what has been achieved and what is to come. This is a bold and innovative project which has delivered real improvements to Glasgow as a city. With further engagement and investment it is possible to see a real and exciting future for Glasgow. Don’t call it a Smart City – it’s a Future City: technology in the background, people in front.
