Abstract United Smart Cities: Towards UNECE Approved Smart Cities Indicators
The United Smart Cities initiative was launched in May 2014 with the aim of establishing a platform to share experiences and best practices among the cities in the UNECE region. In particular, the initiative is focused on countries with economies in transition and developing countries. At the national level, it aims at supporting policy makers to establish an institutional framework which enables innovation and smart urban solutions. At the local level, it aims at supporting local authorities and relevant stakeholders by providing them with recommendations to promote sustainable urban development. One of the outputs of the initiative is the development of Smart Cities Indicators. These indicators will help to evaluate the current status of a city and monitor the changes done. The set of the Smart Cities Indicators will be discussed and eventually endorsed by the UNECE 56 member States. The indicators are being developed in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which are expected to be adopted by the United Nation General Assembly in September 2015.
