Abstract
Getting Statistics and Geography Together

Thanks to INSPIRE the Statistical Community can begin to include more and more geospatial information in the statistical production process. To get access to geospatial information in a harmonized way through search, view and download services enables the National Statistical Institutes to integrate geospatial information in the production of policy relevant information describing sustainable development issues and changes over time. To make this integration happen Eurostat launched an ESSnet grants project, GEOSTAT 2, which will be carried out by a group of Statistical Institutes during 2015 and 2016. The aim of the project is to make recommendations for a unique, harmonized point based reference framework for European statistics which will be of great importance for the coming round of housing and population censuses and various other types of statistics. Included in the project is also to find a Wiki solution and continue the successful annual EFGS conferences to share best practice in the integration of statistics and geography, in close cooperation with the European Forum for Geography and Statistics. The presentation will highlight the potential of integrating geospatial information when producing statistics as well as explain how the GEOSTAT 2 project aims to make use of the INSPIRE data models. It will also show the connection to other European initiatives, like the ELF project, the Census 2020 and UN-GGIM: Europe. As the GEOSTAT 2 will run for two years no results are ready yet, the presentation is an opportunity to connect and get further input from the participants vital for the ongoing work.
