The land cover and land use maps (COS) 1995, 2007 and 2010, are the national reference thematic maps for land cover land use (LCLU) in Portugal. These maps characterize the Portuguese landscape for the period 1995 to 2010, allowing a better understanding of the evolution of LCLU in Portugal. The production of COS was partially funded by the Portuguese Environment Agency in the framework of the Kyoto Protocol reporting. The production of this thematic cartography for the years, 1995, 2007 and 2010, was based in orthophotos and several auxiliary data. The orthophotos have a spatial resolution of 0.5 m on the ground and four spectral bands (Red, Green, Blue and Near-Infrared) for the years 2007 and 2010, and the spatial resolution of 1 m on the ground and three spectral bands (Near-Infrared, Red and Green) for the year 1995. The production of this cartography was performed simultaneously for the three years ensuring thereby its thematic and geometric consistency. The nomenclature of COS is compatible with the classification adopted for the CORINE Land Cover (CLC) map, respecting the concept of structured spatial data recommended by the INSPIRE Directive. This nomenclature consists of a hierarchical system of LCLU classes, with five levels and 225 classes at the most detailed level. COS is available in geographic databases in vector format, with a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 1 hectare.
