Biography
Manuel Rojas G?lvez is the Chief of the GIS Department of Diputaci?n de Badajoz (Spain) since 2008, managing the Geoportal of the provincial institution. For the last 25 years he has held posts in different fields in the Public Administration related to the Information and Communications Technologies (ICT), managing a vast amount of projects which have been presented in different congresses both national and international, some of which have received the recognition of the juries of the awards those projects were opting for.

The SDI of the Provincial de Badajoz (Spain): A GIS for all

Back, though always present, because learning all the good of the past is a characteristic that defines us, are fifteen years of experience that empower us to say without fear of contradiction that coexistence is possible. The new Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) in the Province of Badajoz, is a clear example of how in one system software can coexist different nature; about which we call free, and others named as owners. Our success, or at least, we believe, reflects how decisions need not be imposed by the constraints that we submit ourselves to think that they have to come determined by the choice of one product over another. The era of the white or black was banished from our lives for years, so many that we were not subjected to fierce economic crisis necessarily all forced us to reinvent ourselves. Learning to live together in all areas of life, is undoubtedly the best possible position, and when the real pass to digital, guess sometimes it becomes very complicated, therefore, that only those left behind their fears and open their minds get to enjoy all the good that our geospatial technology puts us ahead. But of course, this openness, and more in the present case, being a Public Administration, depends not only on the decision to take, but also is conditioned because owners and developers want to put aside their differences, starting well in them a real will to live. In our case, we chose Geospatial Portal of the company Intergraph having found "as two do not fight if you do not want" but this time were three who had to live, Alfresco, Geonetwork, and to act as owner. Now, with experience, we long to find someone else who wants to live in our Geoportal, because for us are all equal, all have their place, especially all respected.
