Abstract
The Future of Geoportal Components: An Evaluation for Turkey

Co-Author: Zuhal Akyurek, Prof. Dr., Middle East Technical University/Geodetic and Geographic Information Technologies

The idea of sharing data is the most important element for geographic information infrastructure, data standards and quality. Building spatial data infrastructure and the presentation of the data concepts are available throughout the world. There are specific standards such as ISO TC/211, INSPIRE and OGC to define the rules and procedures of data sharing. Following the production of the data within certain standards, it is important to reach the data through a "door, gate"-like state of the environment. At this point, the portal architecture and technology are essential to respond to this need. However; recent technological developments require improvements in the existing Geoportals and addition of new features. Sustainability of the Geoportal can be achieved by providing the fundamental features, by adapting to technological developments and by consideration of responses to user expectations. For achieving this; recent technological improvements and concepts in Geographic Information Area and its usage in the field of Geoportal, World Geoportal Applications and user expectations are analyzed in this study. In this context; Geoportal features are classified as Basic Features, Development of Existing Geoportal Components and Advanced Geoportal components with 26 components. Moreover; Geoportal components are evaluated via a survey by employees in public sector, private sector and academia in Turkey. In basic features; fundamental Geoportal components are evaluated. In development of existing Geoportal Components; improvements in existing Geoportal components are provided. In Advanced Geoportal Components, recent or technological concepts which are used in the present or will be used in the future are determined.
