Abstract Second Generation View and Download Services - A Focus on Quality
Co-Author: Sampo Savolainen, R&D Director, Spatineo Inc.
The Finnish Transport Agency has provided basic view and download services for many years now. During 2014, new services were created to match evolving requirements by building on the experiences gathered from previous implementations. Fall 2014 the agency published its second generation spatial web services for INSPIRE and non-INSPIRE data. The services include not only view and download services but also a graphical user interface and an easy to use data retrieval service. The goal is to provide a service that both serves public and private organisations' data integration needs and enable citizens to easily access data gathered by the agency. Quality is a key success factor for such an enterprise. One concrete step taken to ensure the quality of the services was to do performance tests to measure the capacity of the services in question. These tests were performed in conjunction with the unveiling of the new services. All relevant parties involved with the coordination, development and maintenance of the services took part in a thorough two day test. The tests revealed multiple areas of improvement ranging from misconfiguration, which prohibited the full use of allocated processing capacity, to optimizing how spatial datasets are visualized, to more far reaching architectural issues. The presentation will elaborate on the specifics of what was tested and why, the testing procedure and the findings of the tests.
