Biography
Kilian Ulm is Chief Market Manager at COWI and plays a major role in the company´s international 3D projects for renowned cities (e.g. Geneva, Zurich, Monaco, Mannheim) and national mapping agencies (e.g. swisstopo in Switzerland, the Centre for GIS in Qatar, the Survey & Land Registration Bureau in Bahrain). After his graduation from ETH Zurich in 2002 he had been working for an ETH-Spin-Off company with focus on digital 3D cities and virtual reality before joining COWI in 2008.

Abstract
Smart 3D Building Models for Cities and National Mapping Agencies

Highly accurate 3D City Models have become an important geospatial dataset for Cities and National Mapping Agencies (NMA). Nowadays, three major requirements have to be fulfilled by such state-of-the-art 3D City Models: First and foremost, they have to be GIS-ready, i.e. manageable in database storage and allow 3D analysis and queries within Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Secondly, 3D City Models have to be visually appealing for 3D visualizations within sustainable urban planning and city marketing. And finally, they need to allow high-performant interactive 3D visualizations in web-based real-time viewers and virtual reality systems. COWI offers the full supply chain from aerial photography (vertical and oblique) to the production of building-oriented 3D City Models (along with digital orthophotos and height models) and the final preparation for the use in a GIS and/or in an interactive 3D visualization. Our proven production methodology delivers high quality, topologically consistent 3D City Models that are compliant with the official 2D cadastral footprints and contain unique ID´s for each building. Furthermore useful geometric attributes like building volume, roof slope, surface etc. are calculated to be used in valuable GIS queries and add significant value for solar potential analysis, flood analysis, etc. COWI has extensive experience in the creation of such state-of-the-art 3D city models and has been consistently awarded considerable international 3D projects for renowned cities (e.g. Geneva, Zurich, Monaco, Mannheim) and National Mapping Agencies (e.g. swisstopo in Switzerland, the Centre for GIS in Qatar, the Survey & Land Registration Bureau in Bahrain) in the past years. At the Geospatial World Forum 2014 we will present the latest results of our projects around the world, also including projects where aerial surveyed data is combined with terrestrial (mobile) acquired data to model photo-realistic high-end 3D data.
