Biography
Daniel Kull is a Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist, working for the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), which coordinates disaster risk management within the World Bank. He represents the World Bank Group and manages partner relationships on disaster risk management, climate change adaptation and humanitarian coordination issues in the Geneva context. He is also part of GFDRR’s specialized program to strengthen weather, climate and hydrologic services (“GFDRR Hydromet”), working closely with and serving as World Bank focal point for the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS), as well as providing technical support to World Bank operations in Albania, Central Asia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Moldova and Nigeria. Before joining GFDRR, Mr. Kull was the global coordinator for disaster risk reduction at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), a research scholar with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Senior Disaster Risk Reduction Advisor for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Tajikistan and Technical Advisor for UNISDR Africa in Kenya. He also served as a hazard specialist for the Swiss Reinsurance Company, having started as a hydraulic engineer for both the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) of the US Army Corps of Engineers. A dual Swiss-American national, Mr. Kull holds a MSc in Water Resource Engineering from the University of California (Davis) and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Union College.

Abstract
Use of Geospatial technology for Agriculture Disaster Risk Management


Risks are inherent, ubiquitous, and varied in the agricultural sector, posing potentially serious consequences for all stakeholders. Adverse movements in agricultural commodity and input prices, together with production related- shocks, which are being exacerbated by climate change and variability, ( temperature , precipitation e.g. drought, floods, hurricanes, pests, diseases etc.) not only adversely impact farmers and firms active in particular supply chain, but may also put severe strain on government’s fiscal position. Considering the vulnerability of agricultural systems, there is a dire need to identify and prioritize appropriate strategies (mitigation-transfer-coping) and helps countries put in place appropriate agricultural investments, policy support, and technical assistance activities to improve resilience and reduced vulnerability of agriculture sector. Geospatial technologies offer numerous applications for better understanding agricultural risks and putting in place appropriate mitigation-transfer-coping solutions in place. This presentation will highlight relevance and application of geospatial technologies for improved agricultural risk management.
