Abstract Small-scale map production with automatic generalization technology at Kadaster NL
Early 2012 the Kadaster NL decided to modernize the productions system for the small scales maps and developed a new system based on fully automatic generalization. The existing process was very labour intensive and it was not possible to achieve the user demand for more actuality. The users of the BRT data expected that the small scale maps will be presented within the same object oriented TOP10NL data model approach. End of 2011 a “High5†innovation sprint showed that automatic generalization functionality has reached sufficient maturity to actually assemble it in a production process for small scale mapping. At the start of the development process a number of key principles were set. • The process should be achieved 100 % automatically. • The new automatic "MAP " may differ from the old manual produced “MAP " • The map product family must be realized much more cost-effectively. • User evaluation during the development is necessary. The development has led to a reduction in throughput of 5000% in respect to the old process. Furthermore, the production costs of the small maps are reduced to 25% of the cost of the manual process. The actuality of the maps has improved from 8-6 years to 2 years. A key success factor for these result are the formation of the highly skilled development team and the iterative approach in relation to the user evaluation in the development process.
