Abstract Photogrammetric Space Resection Solutions: Review and Analysis
Space resection, as adopted in photogrammetric engineering, is defined as determining the spatial position of the camera optical center during exposure (exposure station position) and the space rotation angles describing the attitude of the camera during exposure using images of at least three ground control points that appear on the photo. The term is also used in computer vision to express the camera pose estimation from an image of n points or lines with known correspondence. The solution of the problem is the base for fundamental photogrammetric mathematical models. It has been thoroughly studied in both photogrammetric and computer vision disciplines and the literature contains many published solutions. All developed solutions can be classified as either direct or indirect (iterative). Latter ones are more applicable to photogrammetric applications since initial values for the unknowns can be estimated. This paper is an attempt to review, classify and compare published solutions. Although reviwes were previously published in 1958, 1994 and 2002 some solutions including more recent ones were not in these reviews. The solutions mostly preferred to be used in photogrammetric engineering would be recommended and a list of references containing published solutions would be given.
