Biography
Dr. Uma Shama is a full professor, graduate and continuing education coordinator in Department of Mathematics at Bridgewater State University (USA). She is the Co-Director of the GeoGraphics Laboratory and holds a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science. She has been the co-principal investigator for applied research projects in mobility management technology for the U.S. Department of Transportation (Federal Transit Administration and Research and Innovative Technology Administration), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and several regional transit agencies. She is currently the University Marshall at Bridgewater State University. She has received awards for her research, teaching, and dedication to students.

Abstract
Analysis of Big Data in Transportation Research


As part of the intelligent transportation system, the spatial-temporal big data is generated by the automatic vehicle location (AVL) of the public transit system. Based on the research conducted for the last sixteen years at the GeoGraphics Laboratory of Bridgewater State University (USA), this presentation will describe the use of emerging technologies in public transit, analysis, and visualization of big data to improve the public transportation systems focused on the needs of the consumer to access safe and secure transit service right from planning the trip to providing for enhanced personal productivity and travel assistance while on-board the transit vehicle and at the bus stop.
