Abstract Nanotechnology and Geoscience Solutions for Mitigating and Controlling Environmental Pollution
Economic growth, urbanization and industrialization in large populated cities has caused increasing concerns in environment, natural resource and climate change. To secure environmental sustainability for present and coming generation, it is necessary to mitigate, monitor and control environmental pollution to desired level. This presentation outlines the use of nanomaterials integrated with geoscience for environmental pollution mitigation, monitoring, controlling, and as a pathway to environmental sustainability. Availability of newly launched nanoscale materials based sensor platform, highly multiplexed format over a broad dynamic range, has been studied with applications in detection of pollution in air and water. This use of nanotechnology and geoscience has made it possible to carry out low-cost sensors and portable device as a real time monitoring system. The data of pollution in air and water, detected from nanosensors, can be archived and stored on information infrastructure using sensor service grid evolving as a cloud system. This service provides significant benefits such as rapid and dynamic deployment of sensor nodes, visualization and interoperability of the system. This invaluable and integrated system will be beneficial towards mitigating, monitoring and controlling processes to support public awareness and establish policy priorities for pollution in air and water.
