Biography
Ferdinando Tiezzi was born in Arezzo, Italy. He received the M. Sc. Degree in Electrical and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Perugia, Italy in 1997 and the Ph.D. from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in the field of Computational Electromagnetics.

In 2003, he co-founded JAST SA where he contributed to the development of innovative solutions for satellite communications systems and to the growth of the company until the merger with ViaSat Inc. in 2007. He is currently Director of Business Development at ViaSat in Lausanne, Switzerland. His main research interests include Satellite Communications Systems and Smart Antennas.

Abstract
Satellite Communications for Global Broadband Connectivity

Achieving “truly global” broadband connectivity is one of the new frontiers for the telecommunication industry. Satellite communication systems allow to rapidly deploying networks in large and remote areas with a limited investment, but have typically a limited capacity and a relatively high cost.

New High Capacity Satellites (HCS) fundamentally changed satellite communications—combining internet speeds and capacity. For the first time, satellite is on the broadband curve, meeting the demand of fixed and mobile applications. Beyond consumer connectivity, HCS are proving capable of providing low-cost and fast network access to air, sea and land-mobile users enabling new applications and services not only for entertainment, but also for safety, remote monitoring, telemedicine and more.
