Abstract
GIS On Roma Settlements In Serbia

Ministry of Construction and Urbanism of the Republic of Serbia has developed the geographic (land) information system for mapping the substandard (Roma) settlements (known as the GIS on Roma Settlements), which is financed by the EU pre-accession funds. The comprehensive spatial data base will be established on this way. This base will be used for setting the priorities of implementation of the Action Plan for Roma Housing and for the regulatory preparation (preparation of urban plans and technical documentation) in place for improvement of utility infrastructure and housing in 20 pilot Roma settlements. Later, it will be also used for efficient and transparent monitoring of the progress in further construction works in these and other substandard settlements. The approach for establishing this GIS data base is to integrate data from the other relevant data bases and to supplement it with data from the local level. Parallel, the necessary procedures will be established for changing of information in the future similar projects implementation. This data base will be used not only for improvement of Roma housing conditions, who mainly live in the substandard settlements, but also for implementing the other measures aiming to reducing housing exclusions, as well as to improve the social inclusion and territorial cohesion.
