Abstract
Observations and Analysis of Rainfall Induced Slope Failure for Jelapang and Gua Tempurung Area Using GIS

In general, it is observed that many slope failures occurred within hilly and mountainous area during wet seasons especially after heavy rainfall or thunderstorm. The water that seeped into the slope and soaked the slope materials weaken the effective shear strength of the soil, making it more susceptible to failure. Being the longest expressway and as the ?backbone? of transportation in Peninsular Malaysia, the North-South Expressway traversed through two (2) critical areas that are susceptible to slope failure i.e. Jelapang and Gua Tempurung area. To understand the trend of slope failures within these areas especially for areas within upper catchments that are beyond the normal reach, analysis are carried out using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR) data and GIS technique on top of conventional technique of data collection. This method is further combined with the rainfall data collected from the Real Time Monitoring System (RTMS) to formulate the threshold level in triggering warning alert in case of potential slope failure occurrence within the region.
