Biography
Pier-Giorgio Zaccheddu obtained his diploma in geodesy at the University of Bonn in 1998. From 1998 to 2000 he was affiliated to the governmental administration in the Federal State of North-Rhine Westphalia, by doing an in-service training in every section of official surveying and mapping and government administration. From October 2000 to December 2000 he was an employee of the state survey office in North-Rhine Westphalia, assisting in setting up a network of permanent GPS stations. Since January 2001 he is staff member at the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG). Within its department Geo (spatial) information he has been charged with tasks of international project management as well as of strategic and policy issues in the field of geo (spatial) information. He has been involved in the conception and implementation of the national SDI in Germany (GDI-DE) and in the work related to the INSPIRE initiative in Europe, amongst others, as member of the Thematic Working Group . From 2001 to 2003 he was member of the project management team for the Eighth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names, held in Berlin 2002. From 2006 to 2009 he was the project coordinator of the eContentplus-funded EuroGeoNames (EGN) project until 2009, aiming at setting up a geographical names infrastructure and services in order to better integrate geographical names data within a European SDI. In the latter context he was also a member of the respective INSPIRE Thematic Working Group on Geographical Names from 2008 to 2010. From 2009 to 2013 he was the head of the administration office of the German Inter-ministerial Committee on Geo(Spatial) Information, responsible for the coordination and conduction of tasks on the federal level. Since 2009 he is the Convenor of the Working Group on Toponymic Data Files and Gazetteers of the United Nations Group of Experts on the Standardization of Geographical Names (UNGEGN). Since 2013 he is the coordinator of the staff unit of the president of BKG and responsible for issues related to strategy, organization and public relations of BKG.
