CityGML in Practice - Using 3DCityDB on Oracle for City Modelling

Detailed description of workshop

This workshop will cover various aspects of 3D city modeling from model creation to visualization to data maintenance as well as the practical use of the resulting models. Purpose of the workshop is to share project experience and best practices by looking at various reference implementations. All project examples are based on 3DCityDB, an open source data model implementing the CityGML standard, which comes with a number of tools and components for data management and visualization.

Stephan Plabst Consultant, M.O.S.S. Computer Grafik Systeme, Germany Biography

Stephan Plabst has a Diplom-Ingenieur of surveying from the Technical University of Munich. After first being an assistant lecturer at the university, he now works as consultant at M.O.S.S. Computer Grafik Systeme. In this role he oversees several projects working with large to huge sized 3D city models on state and country level. He is responsible for introducing and maintaining systems installed at the customer sites. Also he is advising customers with regard to systems managing spatial data and workflows.

Lutz Ross Chief Executive Officer, virtualcitySYSTEMS, Germany Biography

Dr. Lutz Ross studied Landscape Planning at the Technical University of Berlin. He finished his studies in 2006 with a Diploma Thesis on the parametric creation of 3D City Models from existing base map data. After his studies he first worked as a research assistant at the renowned Hasso-Plattner-Institut in Potsdam at the Chair of Computer Graphics Systems before he returned to the Technical University of Berlin. There he managed several research projects before finishing his PhD on the application of 3D City Models in Environmental Planning in 2010. During his PhD studies he visited the University of East Anglia in Norwich and the University of British Columbia in Canada. After a short term self-employment he joined virtualcitySYSTEMS GmbH in October 2010 where he acted as Head of System Integration and Product Manage before he became CEO of virtualcitySYSTEMS in 2015.

Dr. Ross has a strong believe in the benefits of using 3D city and landscape models for environmental planning and management. Ever since he first touched GIS systems he has been pushing the limits to create and use three-dimensional digital models of real world scenarios. Together with Dr. Claus Nagel who is CTO at virtualcitySYSTEMS he shapes the strategic development of their 3D SDI components and innovative Urban Simulation tools.

Hans Viehmann Product Manager EMEA, Oracle, Germany Biography

Hans Viehmann is responsible for Oracle's Spatial and Graph technologies as well as Oracle Big Data Spatial and Graph as Director of Product Management. He studied Physics at Hamburg University and Imperial College, London, and started his career in Research with the prestigious Max Planck Gesellschaft before joining ORACLE over twenty years ago. He has been working on GIS Systems, Spatial Databases and Spatial Data Infrastructures since the mid-Nineties and turned Spatial and Graph database sales into a sustainable business for Oracle Germany over the following years. After various positions in Presales Management he joined the Product Management Team in 2011 and since then acts as the representative of the Oracle Spatial and Graph Development Team across Europe, Middle East and Africa. In this role he is responsible for key projects and strategic partnerships, marketing activities, as well as internal awareness around the Location Products within ORACLE's various regional organizations and business units. He also serves on the Advisory Board of InGeoForum, Germany
