Abstract
Truly open data at Land Information New Zealand

Co-Author: Graeme Blick, Chief Geodesist, Land Information New Zealand

Globally, businesses and government are investing in location information (or geospatial data) because of its proven ability to unleash innovation and greater productivity. Since 2007, the New Zealand government has recognised the need to make location information freely accessible and re-useable, and to treat our location assets as important knowledge infrastructure. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) creates much of New Zealand's most valuable location information, and established the first standards compliant, open data service in 2011. The LINZ Data Service provides free and open access to over 40 of LINZ and New Zealand's geospatial datasets to support the creation of new and improved products and services across business, government and the community. LINZ's leadership role in the open data arena hasn't stopped there. LINZ snapped up the Stewardship role for aerial imagery in 2013 and has developed a National Imagery Coordination Programme for New Zealand. Through the programme, LINZ has been able to implement a coordinated approach to the acquisition and dissemination of aerial imagery, including the development of imagery standards while promoting full and open access to nationally significant aerial imagery data. In 2014, New Zealand's most current publicly-owned aerial imagery, covering 95 percent of the country, was made available through the LINZ Data Service. The presentation will discuss in detail how LINZ has responded to all-of-Government directives around the management of information and data held by Government and the benefits realised for our customers in releasing geospatial data for free. We will also discuss LINZ's National Imagery Coordination programme, and the successes, challenges and impacts of running a programme of this magnitude.
