Abstract
Analytics over Open Spatial Data for Policy Development

NICTA start-up company TERRIA created the Australian Government’s open spatial data visualisation platform NationalMap.gov.au. Building on this platform TERRIA has developed several analytics tools to extract immediate value from the Government published data. Under development is the Australian Renewable Energy Mapping Infrastructure (AREMI) project which is bringing together Government, industry and research data services to provide a one-stop search visualise and download capability for renewable energy investors and developers. Data services being developed for the industry include 5 minute solar radiation estimations at a continental scale, wave and wind resource assessments, electricity grid constraints and opportunities, and real-time renewable generation data and predictions in a spatial context. Another project provides a service for groundwater impact assessments for the mining and coal seam gas industries. Based on NationalMap.gov.au, the TERRIA Groundwater visualisation service allows drag and drop capability for large hydrogeological models and bore hole data from industry. This data can be interrogated by Government assessors inside the web browser by creating sub-surface profiles and cross referencing predictive models with observations and other government data sources available in NationalMap.
