Abstract
Agile Aerospace and the Space Eco-system

In 1972, the Apollo 17 astronauts took a photo of Earth that ignited the hearts and imaginations of people across the globe. Since that time, satellite imagery has evolved and completely changed humans' understanding of their planet. Where once a satellite ? commissioned by the government and designed and built by contractors ? took a decade to build, start-ups like Planet Labs are building satellites more efficiently, in a fraction of the time and can iterate on satellites in real-time, responding to change and new information. In the software industry this is called agile software. For the space sector, we call it agile aerospace, and it is revolutionizing the way we explore space and understand our planet. In this presentation, Planet Labs founder and president Robbie Schingler will introduce his company's miniature satellites ? no bigger than 10x10x30 centimeters ? that, when in orbit, provide high-resolution images of the entire planet, on a daily basis. He will detail the evolution of the space industry eco-system that has brought about the agile aerospace movement, as well as highlight its many benefits.
