Data management and raster analyzing is part of my responsibilities in my new position in National Survey Authority.AbstractEarthwork Calculation for Optimum Planning of Infrastructure in Oman using DEMTopography of Sultanate of Oman varies from flat lands in desert to Rocky Mountains. Most of the settlement is along the coast. However, for transportation or housing plan purpose, these mountains create a challenge. Hence, it is necessary to estimate the earthwork (cut and fill) required for optimum planning.
In this study, an attempt has been made to calculate volume of cut and fill for a small area in Muscat Oman that belongs to ministry of housing. The level of ground to be maintained is about 50m in order to avoid flooding. This will also level the ground with other construction in the nearby region.
Data used for this study include Digital Elevation Model of 5m spacing, True color orthophoto at 50cm pixel size. The methodology adopted by using ESRI ArcGIS Spatial Analyst Cut and fill toolbox. A GIS model based on ArcGIS Model builder is developed, which is easy to use.
This study reveals that the result is in conjunction with actual work done on ground and minimized the field survey work to a large extent.
