Hilmi Mohammed Senior Coordinator and Technical Specialist for Shelter and Settlements

BiographyHilmi is a humanitarian shelter and reconstruction specialist. Currently, he is managing the humanitarian Shelter and Settlement Working Group and Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group at InterAction, to collectively improve the collaboration, capacity, practice and policies of stakeholders who respond to humanitarian disasters and crises. He represent InterAction members at the Global Shelter Cluster Strategic Advisory Group and co-chairs the Settlements Approaches in Urban Areas Working Group. Previously, he has worked for UN Agencies and INGOs in complex humanitarian emergencies and development programs. He has responded to and managed emergencies such as the conflict and famine in Somalia, post-genocide refugee crisis in Tanzania/Rwanda, Asian tsunami and armed conflict in Sri Lanka, cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh, as well as emergencies in Haiti, Eretria, Pakistan, Yemen, Lebanon, and Sudan. He has also managed several large infrastructure, reconstruction and refugee resettlement programs in the MENA region. In the private sector, he has worked for Shell Petroleum in Singapore and with SAIC on a US Government chemical weapons demilitarization project under OPCW in Maryland. He has a ME from University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand and a BE from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka specializing in Engineering and Project Management Systems.
