BiographyAonghus O'Keeffe is an Associate at ROD and has over 15 years experience on a wide range of civil engineering services at all stages from conceptual and detailed design through to construction and asset management. Acting as Project Manager and Project Team Lead with a focus on asset information management and bridge engineering, his duties include technical lead, project management and business administration.
A Chartered Engineer, Aonghus holds a BE in Civil Engineering, an MEngSc in IT for Architecture, Engineering and Construction, and an MBA from the Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business. Aonghus leads RODs BIM and asset information management services. He is involved in various industry committees and working groups, including CEN/TC 442/WG 6 regarding BIM for infrastructure. Aonghus was a leading member of the CEDR INTERLINK research consortium.AbstractOwners and operators of road networks use a broad range of information to manage their infrastructure assets. Typically, this information is stored across various systems and in multiple formats, often with gaps, duplication, inconsistency and inaccuracy. Investments to improve information management systems come with concerns regarding vendor lock-in and consistency with forthcoming standards.
The INTERLINK research project addressed these issues on behalf of the Conference of European Directors of Roads (CEDR). The two-year project, which was completed in October 2018, successfully demonstrated how road asset information management could be improved by integrating BIM and GIS standards with established Semantic Web technologies. INTERLINK provided open, scalable, future-proof solutions for roads authorities and their supply chains. These were validated through a series of test cases using commercially available software tools.
The project received a buildingSMART Special Distinction award in 2018 for the application of open BIM standards. This represents a wider trend across standardisation bodies to recognise the potential of Semantic Web technologies in construction and asset management.
Aonghus will present the outcomes of the project and will identify current international initiatives that are building on those outcomes.
