The promise of semi-autonomous and autonomous driving systems within commercial reach has accelerated the need for a new generation of smarter maps made for machines, by machines – the HD maps. For autonomous vehicles, maps need to be far more capable and comprehensive. Created by aggregating sensor perception data from car-mounted cameras, radar and LiDAR, HD maps contain 3D depictions of the road and surrounding environment, as well as rich semantic information.

Here, the analytics process is mission critical. It requires speed and accuracy, achieved through AI, deep learning and cloud technology. For autonomous vehicles to operate safely, however, layers across multiple maps will need to be calibrated within centimeters. Eventually, standardization across mapping layers may be necessary to ensure public safety with autonomous assets operating in the physical world.

The program will provide a technical insight, share unique challenges and experiences, and discuss technical solutions, addressing the challenges and opportunities of developing HD maps.
