BiographyPeter Bauer is the Deputy Director of the Research Department at ECMWF, and supports the Director of the Department in defining and implementing the research necessary to fulfil ECMWF's 10-year strategy. As the manager of the Scalability Programme, he is also in charge of defining and implementing the scientific and computational developments which ensure that the ECMWF forecasting system will operate efficiently on future high-performance computing architectures and that ECMWF can realize its ambitious science goals. Both responsibilities require a strong engagement with academia, national research centres and meteorological-hydrological services across Member States, the European Commission, international organisations and industry. He also coordinates ECMWF's contrubition to Destination Earth.AbstractThe fusion of simulations and observation through Digital TwinsThe prime areas of focus of the first phase of Destination Earth are weather induced extremes and climate change adaptation through so-called digital twins. These twins will greatly enhance our ability to fuse simulations and observations with unprecedented detail of all aspects of the physical and anthropogenic Earth system. The digital twins create new opportunities for understanding both causes and effects of change and for testing adaptation and mitigation options. They will allow policy-makers to anticipate and mitigate the effects of climate change, help save lives and alleviate economic consequences in cases of natural disasters. The holistic approach to this simulation-observation fusion can benefit from large investment in digital technology and infrastructures at national and European level, for example EuroHPC, but needs new levels of European partnership and international collaboration to create a sustainable and impactful programme.
