BiographyDoctoral Researcher at Forschungszentrum Jülich and with the PhenoRob Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bonn. Current research focuses on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) remote sensing for agriculture monitoring. Background consists of a MS in Geospatial Technologies and a BS in Aeronautics with a concentration in UAS. AbstractUnmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), with the ability to fly close to the ground, make it possible to collect data at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolutions. LiDAR systems are more commonly being used on UAS platforms as these sensors become smaller and more accessible. Within the field of precision farming, UAS LiDAR provides the ability to sense further into a canopy and provide important metrics on crop structure and (vegetation) density. These can be related to well know (or classically used) vegetation indices such as Leaf Area Index (LAI), which often plays a major contributor in monitoring plant health and predicting crop yield. This presentation will discuss the methods used to exploit UAS LiDAR characteristics to estimate LAI for crops and the benefits these results have for agriculture monitoring.
