Geospatial technology has made possible to construct highly detailed accounts of human presence to account for urbanisation patterns that are comparable and consistent across countries and over time. This presentation will discuss the evolution of human presence in urban centres and their areas of influence in cities across the globe using a new consistent definition of urban agglomerations. It will outline concomitant environmental, social and institutional challenges of urban form and reflect on how geospatial technology can further contribute to the design of better policies.
