BiographyJohn Whitehead is the Director of Sales and Distribution, APAC, for Trimble''s Geospatial Division. He works with Trimble''s customers and distribution partners throughout the region delivering geospatial solutions utilizing surveying, mapping, and spatial imaging technologies. Prior to Trimble, John worked for the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy throughout Asia as a consultant in the field of land policy, public finance, and property rights. He holds a Master of International Business from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy at Tufts UniversityAbstract The New Paradigm of 3D Scanning Technology in the Transportation Infrastructure segment: Case Studies from Around the GlobePlanning, design, construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure today involves little consistency or congruity with regards to what types of technology and, importantly, data are utilized over the lifecycle of the project. This is not purely a problem facing the engineering community, but rather it impacts the efficiency by which financing - mostly public in Asia - is utilized. Big infrastructure projects are expensive, and in many cases these projects lack a strong geospatial "connective tissue" that facilitates material cost savings, enhances communication between stakeholders, and enables effective and on-time deployment of capital. The Geospatial community is responding to the challenge, however. This presentation will examine the impact of 3D scanning, aerial photogrammetry, and cloud-based visualization tools are having on the transportation infrastructure development. The presentation will draw on international examples from Europe, East Asia and the Americas.
