To leapfrog, Indian Railways need to digitize through large scale, quick and systematic investments in a plethora of areas. Joint Ventures and debt financing will be useful.
IR has over 7000+ railway stations with many across rural areas. Common Services Center to act as a facilitation-cum-skill development kiosk including telepresence and telemedicine facilities can be developed. ‘Smart Transportation System’ can be concatenated with free Wi-Fi facility at stations. Various over-the-top services like e-ticket, e-porter, e-complaint, e-health, e-transport, e-krishi, etc. can be integrated. Carbon footprint and natural light usage of a station can be measured. GPS + GSM + Wi-Fi based intelligent equipment can avail train running position. It can be coupled with appropriate satellite based services to ensure fuel efficient loco driving and ease congestion on Rail routes. IP based Railway Display Network will disseminate real time information round-the-clock. IPv6 needs to be implemented across IR network including Railnet, IPDSLAM, IPAS, signalling, train control, freight, operations, safety and others. Need of the time is to introduce Next-Generation Telecom Transport Network and comprehensive Video Surveillance system. PRS, UTS, FOIS, TMS can be further improved and digitalized. IR assets & systems can be monitored in real time and remotely. IR holds tremendous potential to tap the power of ‘Internet of Things’.
Humans will constantly evolve both on the biological and the technological scale; therefore, in the global as well as national context we need to innovate.
