Abstract Applications of GIS in Afforestation and Forest Fire PreventionNowadays there is an urgent need to acquire accurate and timely information for forest resource protection and management. The application of GIS in forestry significantly improves the management efficiency of afforestation and forest fire prevention. Users can generate a scientific management planning from GIS-based system, and verify the implementation result by remote sensing image recognition and GPS field survey. In the forest fire prevention, smoke and fire can be automatically detected and fire points can be located on the map; then based on landscape information, meteorology parameters, tree species, etc., developing trend of forest fire can be predicated. Combined with other real-time information, such as firemen positions, firefighting resources, etc., users can arrange rescuing efficiently and effectively, as well as reduce the losses resulting from forest fire.
