Abstract Research and business on the prediction of earthquakes using GNSS data in JapanThe author has initiated research on the prediction of earthquakes using GNSS data in Japan since 2002 as a geospatial scientist in order to challenge the most difficult unsolved theme in human history. The basic idea of the prediction depends on the fact that the Earth moves abnormally before earthquake which may be a precursor of the earthquake. Though the author realized the extraordinary abnormal pre-signals in GNSS data before the catastrophic East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami occurred on the 11th March 2011, he could not publicized the fact to public.
In January 2013, the author has established a private company namely Japan Earthquake Science Exploration Agency (JESEA) together with partners for a purpose to save human life by predicting earthquakes. As Geospatial Information Authority, Japanese Government releases daily GNSS data at 1,300 GNSS stations (CORS) all over Japan on Internet free of charge, JESEA has advantage to utilize GNSS data for the prediction of earthquakes. The method of the prediction is based on short term weekly changes of X, Y, Z and H as well as long term change tendency of X, Y, Z and H and so on. JESEA maintains dissemination service of “weekly MEGA earthquake prediction” to more than 50,000 individual members via PC or smartphone. The correctness would be 70 ~ 80 % depending on the definition, which is highly evaluated by such media as TVs and weekly magazines.
All larger past earthquakes have been validated based on scientific background data since 2014. As the given time is limited, only three cases will be introduced in the presentation.
The author believes that the prediction of earthquakes should be based on completely private geospatial business because the governmental authority will not be able to take responsibility and also to have courage of timely information release.
