BiographyCharles R. Trimble was the principal founder of Trimble Navigation Limited in 1978 and served as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from 1981 until 1998. The company originally focused on developing navigation product using the Long Range Aid to Navigation (LORAN) system. In 1982, Mr. Trimble began developing receivers using Global Positioning System (GPS) signals. He was the driving force behind the creation of the first commercially feasible GPS timing receiver introduced in 1984. This success led quickly to the development of commercial products for the survey market. In 1990, Trimble Navigation Limited became the first publicly-held company engaged in providing GPS solutions. His leadership and vision led to further innovations in GPS receiver designs, including the introduction of a military receiver for strategic use in the Gulf War in 1991 as well as handheld receivers for commercial and consumer use in 1993. Under Mr. Trimble’s guidance, Trimble became a market leader in high-precision GPS, introducing the first Real Time Kinematic (RTK) survey receivers and many other new products for Geographic Information Systems (GIS)/mapping, avionics and vehicle tracking. Mr. Trimble holds four patents in signal processing and several patents in GPS. Mr. Trimble created and fostered a highly innovative culture, as evidenced by the Company's patent portfolio, which has the largest single collection of GPS and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) patents in the world.
