WORKSHOP

United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management. Future Trends in Geospatial Information Management: Revision.
Thursday, 28 May 2015, 1100 – 1230 hrs

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION INCLUDING LEARNING OBJECTIVES

The United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) was set up in 2011 and has established itself as the premier forum for UN Member States, relevant international organisations, and the private sector to discuss, enhance and coordinate global geospatial information at the highest level.

At the inaugural meeting of UN-GGIM, held in the Republic of Korea, in October 2011, the Committee of Experts decided there was a need to document the thoughts of leaders in the geospatial world as to the future of the industry.

The report ‘Future trends in geospatial information management: the five to ten year vison’ was endorsed by the Committee of Experts at its Third Session in July 2013; the report provides expert opinion on the short- to mid-term developments in geospatial information, and is now seen as a strategic guide for the globally geospatial industry. It has been translated into all the official United Nations languages and can be viewed and downloaded from the UN GGIM website.

Following the endorsement the Committee of Experts has requested that a review of the report should be undertaken and a new version published ahead of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meeting in 2016.

The process to review the document has begun, and new contributions for the second edition are being sought.

The first draft of the Second Edition will be published around April 2015, and this workshop has been designed to allow experts who are attending the INSPIRE-GWF Conference to discuss the key themes contained within the document and to contribute additional information to the final draft.

The final draft will be presented to the Committee of Experts at the meeting in August 2015 for endorsement.

[Please note: a similar workshop was hosted, with great success, alongside the GWF Conference held in Amsterdam in 2012.]
