WORKSHOP

Data Infrastructures for Sustainable Growth
Thursday, 28 May 2015, 0900 – 1230 hrs

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

Considering that the underlying objectives of both INSPIRE and the Geospatial World Forum is to promote the optimal use and implementation of spatial data and resources for growth, there is an existing foundation for a synergised effort. While INSPIRE is designed to discuss the latest developments related to the INSPIRE Directive (addressing common policy issues, applications and implementations of SDIs), the Geospatial World Forum features on success stories of private industry and users of spatial data in boosting the business of spatial information, and the downstream dissemination of technology applications. By combining efforts, both INSPIRE and the Geospatial World Forum can create a strong case for Public-Private Partnership initiatives, strengthen the dialogue and trigger discussions for promotion of geospatial technologies with all stakeholders, while enabling networking of professionals at a global scale.

The 2015 INSPIRE-GWF conference (www.geospatialworldforum.org) offers the opportunity to submit proposals for abstracts of presentations, which will be delivered in thematic sessions, workshops and poster presentations. The conference will be attended by about 2 000 participants, so organising a workshop there creates an excellent opportunity for workshop delegates to meet key international stakeholders, give high visibility to the JRC E&I programme and to their activities. Within this context the E&I workshop aims to bring together both users and providers of data to explore together on how to use more accessible and well-documented information that can act as a factor for economic growth.

The target audience of the workshop would include both data providers and users (startups and SMEs, other businesses, planning authorities, etc.), as well as representatives of international organizations (World Bank, institutions under the umbrella of the UN, EC, etc.).

The demand of the E&I countries, articulated by the JRC Enlargement national contact points in 2014, would determine the central topics of the workshop. Those cover the mechanisms for the establishment of successful data-related products and services as part of a Digital Single Market in the following fields: role of SMEs for regional development, intelligent transport, bioenergy and energy efficiency, human health, technology and agriculture. Particular attention, with respect to the above, would be paid on:

  • The transfer and use of results of data-related research into business oriented products and services;
  • Availability of value added services and products as result of the unlocking spatial data thanks to the implementation of the INSPIRE Directive;
  • Big data use as an additional means for boosting economic growth within a Digital Single Market;
  • Exploitation of the synergies between the activities of international (European Commission, United Nations, World Bank), national and regional organizations in support of growth;
  • Benefit of open data on economic growth and social well-being;
  • Role of SMEs in the creation of data-related value added services and products;
  • Means for transferring good practices within the region and beyond for making business with data.

TARGET AUDIENCE

The workshop will target the following audience:

  • Representatives of businesses and decision making bodies from Enlargement and Integration countries
  • Representatives of selected SMEs from across Europe, specialized in creating value added ICT products and services
  • Providers of statistical and geospatial data with emphasis on open data
  • Representatives of projects from E&I countries, relevant to the establishment of a Digital Single Market in Europe
