WORKSHOP

Hybrid (indoor and outdoor) location based services and mapping
Thursday, 28 May 2015, 1330 – 1500 hrs

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

After several years of missed expectations, the Location-Based Service (LBS) market is now expanding significantly, with mass solutions now available in the market. Being able to seamlessly locate people and objects within “hybrid” (indoor AND outdoor) spaces can enable a wide range of brand new LBS of significant economic and societal relevance. However, few barriers still limit a potentially broader take up of indoor/outdoor LBS, most notably:

  • limited availability of indoor data,
  • lack of hardware-independent technological ecosystems for LBS and
  • lack of standards specifically designed for hybrid use, both in indoor and outdoor scenarios.

This workshop will illustrate the domain of indoor LBS and, in particular, it will present IndoorGML, the recent standard voted by the Open Geospatial Consortium, and its implementation in i-locate, the EC-funded project that is delivering an open source LBS toolkit based on open standards and on use of open indoor maps. The workshop will highlight how the results of the project will help unleash the full potential of “hybrid” indoor and outdoor LBS.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Participants with an interest in the domain of LBS (indoor and outdoor) as well as those interested in the IndoorGML standard.

WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS

Instructions for participants: (laptop, pre-workshop preparation)
