WORKSHOP

Could Agriculture benefit from INSPIRE? Could INSPIRE benefit from Agriculture?
Friday, 29 May 2015, 1330 – 1500 hrs

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The agriculture sector is a unique sector due to its strategic importance for both European citizens (consumers) and European economy (regional and global) which, ideally, should make the whole sector a network of interacting organizations. The seasonality and ubiquity of agriculture make agricultural practices and production amenable to efficient synoptic monitoring. Besides, food supplies depend on trends in the natural environment, including weather and climate, freshwater supplies, soil moisture and other variables. At the same time, modern agriculture has a major impact on the environment while damaging biodiversity. Unless they are sustainably managed, farms and pastures can cause erosion, desertification, and chemical pollution and water shortages. In such case agriculture manage large amount of environmentally related information The different groups of stakeholders involved in the agricultural activities have to manage many different and heterogeneous sources of information that need to be combined in order to make economically and environmentally sound decisions, which include the definition of policies, valuation of ecological performances, development of sustainable agriculture, crop recollection timing and pricing, plagues detection, etc.
In the cases of data analyses and decision support programmes, it is recommended to focus on:

  • the development of protocols and standards for the key data layers;
  • robust methods for data analysis, integration and delineation of management zones;
  • innovative designs for the implementation of whole-of-field experimentation based;
  • easy-to use software to facilitate the use and adoption of the above by farmers, their consultants and researchers.

The main objective of the workshop will be to demonstrate, how agriculture could benefit from INSPIRE standardisation effort. It will be mainly demonstrate on FOODIE data models. During workshop will be also demonstrate other initiatives like OpenLandUse, OpenSesnorsNetwork, OpenRuralRoadNetwork and others and their relation with agriculture and INSPIRE. Rest of workshop will be focused on discussion about possible standards for agriculture. The main learning objective will be to analyse, how INSPIRE standards could be transformed into Farm Management Information Systems and how information collected on the level of farm could become part of INSPIRE infrastructure.
