Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE)

The Association of Geographic Information Laboratories for Europe (AGILE) was established in 1998 to promote academic teaching and research on GIS at the European level and to ensure the continuation of the networking activities that have emerged as a result of the EGIS Conferences and the European Science Foundation GISDATA Scientific Programmes. AGILE seeks to ensure that the views of the geographic information teaching and research community are fully represented in the discussions that take place on future European research agendas. AGILE also provides a permanent scientific forum where geographic information researchers can meet and exchange ideas and experiences at the European level. The activities of AGILE are managed by an eight person council elected by its members. The role of the IAP Swiss Platform is to:

  • Increase awareness amongst economic actors about the potential added-value of space technologies;
  • Stimulate the emergence of new ideas and services;
  • Help create international partnerships so as to generate a global customer base needed for services to be sustainable;
  • Be an 'honest broker' between ESA and Swiss stakeholders (e.g., ‘spacetech’ companies, solution/service providers, customers, user communities).
AP-Swiss helps companies to target new services, identify Swiss, European and international partners and obtain funding from ESA for awareness, feasibility and demonstration activities, up to market validation.


Copernicus Masters

The Copernicus Masters competition is awarding prizes to innovative solutions for business and society based on Earth observation data. Along with cash prizes, the winners will receive technical support in realising their ideas, access to satellite data, and start-up support from a prize pool worth a total of more than EUR 300,000. In 2014, for the first time, the Copernicus Masters is carried out on a worldwide basis. Geared primarily toward start-ups and other companies, researchers, and students, the competition will require entrants to submit their applications from 15 April to 13 July 2014 at www.copernicus-masters.com.

The Group on Earth Observations is coordinating efforts to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems, or GEOSS. GEO was launched in response to calls for action by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and by the G8 (Group of Eight) leading industrialized countries.
