Abstract UAV-based multi-sensor survey of disaster locations for first-responder supportEarthquakes, flooding, fires, or industry accidents often lead to human casualties, damage of property, as well as biological, chemical, or nuclear contamination. In any case fast and precise knowledge of the instantaneous situation at the disaster location is the key to provide immediate help for the persons concerned, prevent the surrounding from further damage, and finally clear the site. First responders often face the challenge that such information is not available due to the topography-changing character of such events. UAV reconnaissance is a very powerful way of overcoming this dangerous lack of information. In many cases, mere video footage or aerial images are not sufficient to judge, for instance how to safely access a site. Laser scanners providing 3D information supplemented by additional sensors have the potential to make a major difference for taking safe and efficient measures on short notice. The presentation will present results from field tests employing a RIEGL VUX laser scanner, RGB cameras, and a gamma probe mounted on a RIEGL RiCOPTER surveying simulated disaster locations. A broadband data downlink together with a specifically designed data processing and visualization software provide tailored real-time information to the officer in charge.
