BiographyDr Akhilesh Gupta obtained his M.Sc. degree in Physics from Lucknow University and PhD degree in Atmospheric Sciences from IIT, Delhi. He worked in various leading organizations such as India Meteorological Department, National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, Disaster Management Cell of Department of Science & Technology during 1985-2007.
During 2007-09, Dr Gupta has been the Adviser to the Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences.
Dr Gupta was Secretary to University Grants Commission (UGC) during 2012-13.
Currently, he is heading Climate Change Programme (CCP) of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India coordinating and implementing two National Missions on Climate Change under National Action Plan on Climate Change launched by the Government.
Dr Gupta has published over 100 research papers in various National and International journals. He is co-author of 3 books, author of over 200 articles and nearly 300 reports. He has been member of India’s core negotiating team on Climate Change for several meetings of UNFCCC and IPCC. Dr Gupta has been a member of National Coordination Team which drafted India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change in 2008.
Dr Gupta is a member of over 70 national level committees in various capacities.
Dr Akhilesh Gupta received felicitation of His Excellency President of India in 2003 for his outstanding contribution to the field of weather forecasting. Dr Gupta is Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE) and Indian Meteorological Society. He was awarded D.Lit(Honoris Causa) by Jagatguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University, Chitrakut in 2013 and Honorary Professorship of Amity University Rajasthan.
