Rotterdam 3D City Model ready for the next level
The municipality of Rotterdam is one of the precursors in 3D city modelling in the Netherlands. In 2008 the first 3D city model was created and distributed as open data. This model gave the users the first possibility to work with 3D city models. As we are now almost 8 years later it is time for further developments. The main reason being that users started asking for more advanced options regarding 3D. This proved us that they are ready for the next level. We are convinced that the technique is not the problem anymore, nor is the availability of software tools and datasets. In order to integrate the 3D city model into the processes of different users, we should focus on the organisation, making sure the 3D model can be easily integrated, without changing data, tools or technique. The ambition is to make 3D information mainstream and an integral part of our processes in the next 5 years. In order to do so, 3D information will be collected and maintained in a central standard storage based on open standards, easily accessible and used for linking applications from various fields of work. We will present our unique user centred approach and the results we achieved so far. For example connecting 3D city models with BIM models and the integration of the underground infrastructure. We will also inform you about the international workshop which resulted in a cooperation regarding 3D city modelling between Hamburg, Helsinki, Rotterdam, Singapore and Vienna, called 5CC.
